WHY DID WE CHOOSE TO NAME THE ACADEMY “COVE?”:
Cove is a surf spot in Maui that is special to both Chris and Deborah.
For Chris, growing up in Maui, Cove was a “safe place”. If something bad was happening in his life, he would go to COVE and surf through dusk. He could always count on the people there to get him through his tough times. On the contrary, when something good was happening, he knew the people at COVE would celebrate with him. For the good or for the bad, COVE was always welcoming to him; it was his refuge. COVE was always a constant and, no matter what, he knew COVE was the place he could count on when “life happened.”
The years that Deborah lived in Maui were some of the most impressionable years of her life. During this time, she would go to COVE right before Sunset and just be. She would sit on the railings, watch the ocean in awe, watch the surfers and be left alone with her thoughts. The sunset at COVE is very special because as the last sliver of sun disappears behind the ocean horizon, there is a bright green flash. COVE was a sanctuary to Deborah; a place of wonder, awe and a place where she felt closest to God.
THE REASON FOR OUR VISION FOR COVE?:
Everyone is going through something in life. Good, bad or otherwise, life is going to happen. We want to create a community that replicates what COVE means to us: a “safe place”, and a community of people that can rely on each other to get through tough times and to celebrate good times. A community that is always welcoming and makes people feel special; all while providing top-notch Jiu Jitsu.
THE WORDS THAT DESCRIBE OUR VISION:
“It will be a shelter and shade from the heat of the day and a refuge and hiding place from the storm and rain.” – Isaiah 4:6
WHAT DOES THE LOGO MEAN?:
-The logo consists of the Roman Numerals four and six, which represent the bible verse that defines our vision (Isaiah 4:6).
-The shape of the logo is a hexagon; which is one of the most efficient shapes in nature.
-The top of the hexagon is symbolic of a shelter
